Distinguished Speaker Series Welcomes Jackie Cruz
ATLANTA, GA, October 21, 2015 — Actress and musician Jackie Cruz will share her story of overcoming adversity after surviving a near-fatal car accident and the importance of pursuing your dream as part of the 2015-16 Distinguished Speaker Series hosted by Spotlight Programs Board at Georgia State University on Monday, Oct. 26.
Best known for her standout role as Flaca Gonzales on the Netflix hit show “Orange is the New Black,” Cruz is on the fast track to stardom. As a singer and songwriter, she has traveled the world and entertained thousands with her unique sound, and she was named one of the Top Latino Powerhouses Under 40 by the Hollywood Reporter in 2013. She also served as a fashion correspondent during New York Fashion Week in 2014 for OK! Magazine and was named by Latina Magazine as its Celebrity Style Crush and Best Dressed Latina.
Georgia State University students, faculty and staff with a valid Panther ID are invited to attend this free event, which will take place at 3 p.m. in the Student Center East Ballroom. Doors will open at 2 p.m. Seating is limited and will be first come, first served. Guests outside of the Georgia State community will be admitted on a standby basis if space permits. There will be no ticket purchase or other requirement for admission.
Cruz was born in New York City and spent her childhood shuttling between New York, Los Angeles, the Dominican Republic and Miami. She often says she carries a little piece of each city with her. Raised by her mother and aunts, she drew from the strength that helped her overcome brain surgery, a coma and a collapsed lung and remained resolute in her determination not to let anything stand in the way of her dream to become a musician.
In her interactive session, Cruz shares her inspirational story of struggle and determination and inspires the audience to achieve their dreams, no matter how large or small. Using the transformative powers of music, she challenges audiences to experience life as a harmonic melody sung to your own tune.
