Paintball Club: World Cup Champions
The Paintball Club at Georgia State University is one of twenty-four current Sport Clubs sponsored by Recreational Services. Sport Clubs sponsored by Recreational Services are student-run organizations. Over the last five years, the Paintball Club has been one of the most successful Sport Clubs. The club has participated in the National Championship each spring since 2012. It took home its best finish this past spring by bringing home the second place banner!
Flash forward to this fall where the club participated in the Collegiate World Cup in Kissimmee, Florida on November 5-6. After a long weekend of competition, the club was the last team standing bringing home the first place banner! The club beat out 12 other teams to be crowned Collegiate World Cup Champions.
The club’s participating members for the gold cup championship were Thomas Brannon, Tim Jordan, David Roller, Zach Russell, Ross Terrell, Austin Tian and Kalain Zorda.
The club is led by sophomore president, Austin Tian. He is a sophomore from Marietta and is an accounting major. Austin played paintball recreationally in high school and found out Georgia State had a Paintball Club through the club’s Facebook page. When asked what his favorite thing about the Paintball Club, he responded
I enjoy the atmosphere of the club and have fun playing the sport with my teammates. I have learned a lot about leadership as being a leader of a club.
~ Austin Tian
The club’s vice-president is Ross Terrell. He is a doctoral candidate in chemistry and is also from Marietta. He got involved with the club by being recruited by his classmate and previous president, Vince Martinez. Ross had little to no previous experience with the sport before joining the club. Ross said his favorite thing about the club is
traveling and competing as a team and making friends with opposing squads at tournaments. I have learned importance of team cohesion, keeping members together, and being on the same page.
~ Ross Terrell
Prospective students can join the Paintball Club at any point during the academic year. The club practices at Nitro Paintball field in Canton on the weekends and competes throughout the year. The club is looking forward to improving upon their second place finish from last year’s Nationals by bringing the first place prize to Georgia State. Anyone interested in joining the Paintball Club can email Sport Clubs for more information.
